Species you may find near Whakatane
Marlin – In the months of February to Mid April the Blue and Striped Marlin arrive in large numbers from Tekaha to Cape Runaway but can also be caught in closer waters to Whakatane. You never know your luck, best fishing techniques are Popping or jigging live baits. Try your luck from October to March.
Snapper – Fish for Snapper on the bottom with a ledger rig or try stray lining in the shallow waters for the bigger fish. Best fishing techniques are ledgering and freelining.
Hapuka – Winding up large Bass from waters of 200 metres plus in February, March or April when Hapuka come into the shallower depths to spawn. Fish for Blue Nose by drift fishing. During the season you may want to try the awesome game fishing in the Bay.
